✨ The short answer

  • Buying for tradition? Buy something small: a coin or a light piece. A gram on Dhanteras is still a gram on Dhanteras.
  • Buying jewellery for a wedding? A fifth or more of what you pay can go on making charges and GST, and you won’t get that back if you sell. Use the calculator below before you go to the shop.
  • Buying as an investment? Gold ETFs or gold mutual funds have no making charges, no locker and no purity worries. You can buy a unit online on Dhanteras day itself.
  • Avoid: unregulated “digital gold” for big amounts (SEBI has warned about it), and any jewellery without a 6-digit HUID hallmark.
  • New Sovereign Gold Bonds have not been issued since February 2024. You can only buy old ones on the stock exchange.

Why gold costs Indians more this Diwali

💱 Rupee at a record low

The rupee has slipped past 96 to the dollar. Gold is priced in dollars, so a weaker rupee makes it costlier in India even when global prices don’t move.

🛢️ Oil and global tension

Brent crude is near $107 and geopolitical risk is high, which pushes investors towards gold as a safe asset.

🏦 Central bank buying

Central banks and gold ETFs around the world are still accumulating, so demand doesn’t let up.

🔮 Where it could go

Kedia Advisory’s Ajay Kedia sees ₹1,80,000 by Diwali or year-end. That is one analyst’s view, not a guarantee. Gold has also fallen sharply after peaks before.

SEBI’s digital gold warning: on 8 November 2025, SEBI cautioned that “digital gold” and “e-gold” sold on apps and online platforms are not securities or regulated commodity derivatives, so investors don’t get securities-market protection. Gold ETFs and gold mutual funds are SEBI-regulated alternatives.

🔍Before you pay: the hallmark and bill checklist

Since 1 April 2023, gold jewellery sold in India must carry the BIS hallmark with a 6-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification). A proper hallmark has three marks:

BIS △Triangle logo of the Bureau of Indian Standards
22K916Purity grade (916 = 91.6% gold)
AB12C36-digit HUID, unique to each piece

0 of 7 checked

  • Verify the HUID in the BIS Care app (“Verify HUID”). It should match the item type, purity and jeweller.
  • Weigh it in front of you and get the gross and net weight on the bill, minus any stones.
  • Ask for making charges as a % or ₹ per gram, not a “flat offer price”.
  • Check that stones aren’t charged at the gold rate. Their weight should be shown separately.
  • Get a GST invoice with the HUID, purity, rate per gram, making charges and 3% GST shown separately.
  • Ask about the buyback policy in writing: the deduction on exchange and on cash resale.
  • Pay digitally for big purchases. Cash above ₹2 lakh in a single transaction is not allowed under income tax law.

🧾Tax when you sell later

  • Physical gold, digital gold and gold mutual funds: held more than 24 months, a flat 12.5% (no indexation). Sold earlier, the gain is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate.
  • Gold ETFs: long-term after just 12 months, also at 12.5%. Unlike stocks, there’s no ₹1.25 lakh tax-free limit.
  • Sovereign Gold Bonds: tax-free at maturity only if you subscribed when the bond was issued. Bonds bought on the exchange are taxed as capital gains.
  • Exchanging old gold for new counts as a sale, so capital gains rules apply to the old gold’s gain.
🥈 Silver instead? Silver is around ₹2,35,000 per kg. Buying a silver coin on Dhanteras is equally traditional and much cheaper. The same analyst who expects gold at ₹1.8 lakh is even more bullish on silver, but silver swings far more sharply than gold.

❓FAQs

Dhanteras is on Friday, 6 November 2026. Trayodashi tithi starts around 10:30 AM on 6 November and ends around 10:47 AM on 7 November. Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is on Sunday, 8 November.
Buying gold is considered auspicious all through Dhanteras day. Many families prefer the evening Pradosh Kaal, roughly 5:46 PM to 8:20 PM in Delhi, with the Lakshmi-Kuber puja muhurat around 6:17 to 8:15 PM. Ravi Pushya on 1 November is another popular day.
Nobody can say for certain. Festive demand can briefly push prices up, but the bigger drivers are the rupee, global interest rates and geopolitics. Some analysts expect further gains. If you’re investing, buy in small instalments instead of all at once on one day.
Bank coins are certified and sealed, but banks usually don’t buy them back, and they often cost a little more. A jeweller’s hallmarked coin is easier to sell or exchange later. For pure investment, a gold ETF avoids GST altogether.
When you buy ready-made jewellery, the whole bill (gold plus making) is usually charged 3% GST. The 5% rate applies when you give your own gold to a jeweller to make or repair something, which counts as job work.
No new SGBs have been issued since February 2024, and the government has effectively discontinued the scheme. You can buy older series on NSE or BSE, but the tax-free maturity benefit now applies only to original subscribers.
The gold is usually held by a vault partner, but the product itself isn’t regulated by SEBI or RBI, which SEBI flagged in November 2025. Keep it to small amounts, or use a gold ETF or gold mutual fund instead.
