- RBI pays the average price of 999 gold over the 3 business days before redemption. On 2 November 2026 that was โน14,167 a gram.
- Bonds issued in 2019โ2022 at โน3,196 to โน5,334 a gram are now worth roughly 2.7 to 4.4 times what investors paid.
- Gains are tax-free when RBI redeems your bond. Selling on the stock exchange instead attracts 12.5% capital gains tax.

๐ช What will RBI pay me?
Choose your series and how many grams you hold. The gold price is pre-filled with RBI’s latest redemption price. Change it to today’s rate if you like.
๐ก Interest is 2.5% a year on what you paid, credited every six months and taxable at your slab rate. Figures here are estimates: RBI announces the exact redemption price a day or two before each redemption date, and the dates come from RBI’s published calendar.
How SGB premature redemption works
Sovereign Gold Bonds have an 8-year term, but SGB premature redemption lets you exit early once 5 years have passed since the issue date. Early exit is allowed only on the dates interest is paid, which come around every six months, so each bond gets six exit chances before it matures.
How RBI sets the SGB redemption price
The SGB premature redemption price is the simple average of the closing price of 999-purity gold published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) for the three business days before the redemption date. For example, for SGB 2021-22 Series VII, redeemed on 2 November 2026, RBI used the IBJA prices from 28, 29 and 30 October and set the price at โน14,167 per gram.
How to apply
- Check your window. Requests are accepted for roughly three weeks, closing about 10 days before the redemption date. The table below lists every date to March 2027.
- Bonds in a demat account: place the request with your broker or depository participant. Many brokers have an online “SGB redemption” option.
- Bonds held as a certificate: apply at the bank, post office or agent where you bought them, or through RBI Retail Direct if you bought there.
- Get paid: the redemption amount and your last interest payment are credited to your linked bank account on the redemption date.

Tax on SGB premature redemption
| How you exit | Tax on the gain |
|---|---|
| Premature redemption with RBI (after 5 years) | Nil: capital gains on redemption are exempt for individuals |
| Holding to maturity (8 years) | Nil |
| Selling on NSE or BSE, held over 12 months | 12.5% long-term capital gains tax, without indexation |
| Selling on NSE or BSE, held 12 months or less | Taxed at your income tax slab rate |
The 2.5% yearly interest is taxable every year whichever way you exit. Bonds on the exchange also often trade below the gold price, so for most holders past the 5-year mark, SGB premature redemption through RBI beats selling on the exchange.
Should you redeem early or hold till maturity?
Redeeming now can make sense if
- gold is a large share of your savings and you want to rebalance
- you need the money for a goal in the next year or two
- you’d rather lock in today’s price than take gold-price risk
Holding can make sense if
- you want to keep some gold as a long-term hedge
- you value the extra 2.5% a year on your original investment
- you have no particular use for the money before maturity
The calculator’s “hold to maturity” column shows how much interest you’d still earn and how far gold could fall before redeeming now works out better. Nobody can reliably predict gold prices, so treat this as a sense check, not a forecast. If you’re unsure, redeeming part of your holding is a reasonable middle path. Track the latest price on our gold rate today page, and read when to buy gold and silver if you plan to reinvest.
Frequently asked questions
When can I redeem my Sovereign Gold Bond early?
After 5 years from the issue date, on any interest payment date (roughly every six months) until the bond matures at 8 years. You must apply in the request window, which usually closes about 10 days before the redemption date.
What is the SGB premature redemption price for November 2026?
For SGB 2021-22 Series VII, redeemed on 2 November 2026, RBI set the price at โน14,167 per gram. Each later redemption gets its own price, based on the IBJA average of 999 gold for the three business days before that date.
Is SGB premature redemption tax-free?
Yes. Capital gains are exempt for individuals when RBI redeems the bond, whether early or at maturity. Only the 2.5% yearly interest is taxable.
Do I get interest if I redeem early?
Yes. You receive interest up to the redemption date, and the final payment is credited along with the redemption amount. You lose only the interest for the remaining years until maturity.
Can I redeem only part of my SGB holding?
Yes. You can request redemption of some units and keep the rest. Each unit is one gram of gold.
I missed the window. What now?
Your next chance is the following interest date, about six months later. You can also sell on the stock exchange at any time if your bonds are in demat form, but capital gains tax applies and the price may be below the gold rate.
