HRA exemption calculator (Rent Receipt Generator)

A rent receipt only matters if it reduces your tax. HRA exemption is the lowest of three amounts, so paying more rent doesn’t always mean a bigger exemption. Enter monthly figures:

If you’re self-employed or your salary has no HRA component, you can still claim a deduction for rent under section 80GG (old regime). It’s the lowest of:

  • ₹5,000 a month (₹60,000 a year)
  • 25% of your adjusted total income
  • Rent paid minus 10% of your adjusted total income

Rent receipt FAQs

Is a rent receipt made online valid for HRA?

Yes. The format doesn’t matter. What matters is that it has the right details and is signed by your landlord. Print the receipts from this generator and get each one signed.

Do I need the landlord’s PAN for HRA?

Only if the rent you pay is more than ₹1 lakh in the financial year. If your landlord doesn’t have a PAN, ask them for a signed declaration saying so, along with their name and address.

Is a revenue stamp needed on a rent receipt?

A revenue stamp is needed when rent of more than ₹5,000 is paid in cash. For bank, UPI or cheque payments it isn’t needed, though some employers still ask for it.

Can I claim HRA without rent receipts?

Employers often allow claims up to ₹3,000 a month without receipts. Above that you need receipts, and it’s wise to keep a rent agreement and bank records as proof in case the tax department asks.

Can I claim HRA in the new tax regime?

No. HRA exemption and section 80GG are available only under the old tax regime.

Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?

Yes, if the house is owned by your parents and you actually pay them. They’ll need to declare the rent as income. Keep a rent agreement and pay by bank transfer.

Receipts must reflect rent you actually pay. Making receipts for rent that wasn’t paid is tax evasion and can attract penalties. The HRA calculator is an estimate, not tax advice.
