How to read this list

Gazetted: compulsory holidays for central government offices in Delhi/New Delhi, per DoPT. Offices elsewhere have 14 of the same compulsory holidays plus 3 picked locally. Restricted: optional; central government staff can take any two. Bank: closures under the RBI’s Negotiable Instruments Act calendar, which differ by state; every 2nd and 4th Saturday and every Sunday is also a bank holiday. Corporate: the holidays most private companies give (your HR policy decides). Dates shown in red fall on a weekend.

😬 2027’s weekend losses

Six 2027 gazetted holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday: Independence Day and Milad-un-Nabi (both Sun 15 Aug), Gandhi Jayanti (Sat 2 Oct), Dussehra (Sat 9 Oct), Guru Nanak Jayanti (Sun 14 Nov) and Christmas (Sat 25 Dec). In 2026, the remaining long weekends are Guru Nanak Jayanti (Tue 24 Nov: take Mon 23 for 4 days) and Christmas (Fri 25 Dec: 3 days).

Bank holidays: what you need to know

  • Saturdays: Banks are closed on every 2nd and 4th Saturday and all Sundays. 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays are working days.
  • State-wise: The RBI declares holidays region by region under the Negotiable Instruments Act, so a bank in Kolkata may be shut on a day Mumbai is open. Only Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti are holidays everywhere.
  • Online banking works: UPI, IMPS, net banking, cards and ATMs work on bank holidays. NEFT and RTGS also run 24×7, but cheque clearing waits for the next working day.
  • 2027 bank list: The RBI publishes the official 2027 calendar region by region, usually in December. The 2027 bank holidays below are expected from the festival dates, and we’ll update them once the RBI list is out.

🏦 What about the bank strike?

Bank unions (UFBU) had announced a strike for 28–30 September and an indefinite strike from 26 October 2026, demanding a 5-day work week and changes to the new PLI scheme. Both were deferred after talks with the Indian Banks’ Association, and banks such as Central Bank of India have told stock exchanges the strike is deferred. Check the news before you plan a branch visit.

Corporate (private company) holidays

There’s no single national list for private companies. Every employer must give the three national holidays: Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti. The rest depend on your state’s Shops and Establishments Act or Factories rules and your company’s policy. Most offices give 10–12 days, usually from this pool:
