E20 Petrol: How to Protect Your Car and Bike From Ethanol Damage (2026 Guide)
E20 Petrol is now the only regular petrol in India. Here’s what ethanol really does to an engine, which vehicles are at risk, and 9 practical steps to protect yours, whatever the government and the internet say.
If you’ve filled up in the last year, you’ve been running your vehicle on E20 petrol: petrol blended with 20% ethanol. It’s now standard at pumps across India, and plain petrol or E10 isn’t sold alongside it. The government says E20 Petrol is safe and causes, at most, a small mileage dip. Many owners of older cars and bikes say their vehicles are drinking more fuel and needing more repairs.
Both sides have a point, and your vehicle’s age decides which one applies to you. This guide cuts through it: what ethanol actually does, how to check if your vehicle is at risk, and exactly what to do to protect it.
E20 Petrol: What the Government Says vs What Owners Say
๐๏ธ Government & carmakers
- Joint tests by IOCL, ARAI, SIAM and the Indian Institute of Petroleum found no drivability, starting or metal-compatibility problems.
- Expected mileage drop of 1โ6% (ARAI), or 3โ5% in some vehicles (PIB, July 2026).
- Maruti serviced 1.5 crore older, non-E20 vehicles in FY26 with no E20 Petrol-linked damage reported.
- Carmakers say warranties remain valid on E20.
- Older BS-III vehicles (roughly pre-2016) may need minor rubber part and gasket replacements during routine servicing.
๐ Owners on the ground
- A LocalCircles survey of 36,000+ owners in 323 districts found 80% of owners of pre-2023 vehicles reported lower mileage by October 2025.
- 52% reported unusual wear or repairs, nearly double the figure from August 2025.
- Problems cited: fuel lines, tanks, carburettors, injectors and tank rust.
- Real-world tests show drops of up to 12% in some cars.
- Over half said they’d back E20 only if it were optional and 20% cheaper.

What Ethanol Actually Does to a Vehicle
It absorbs water
Ethanol is hygroscopic: it pulls moisture from the air. Too much water, and the ethanol-water mix separates from the petrol and sinks to the bottom of the tank.
It attacks old rubber
Tests found older rubber and plastic parts (hoses, seals, O-rings, gaskets) deteriorate faster on E20 than E10. Newer vehicles use ethanol-resistant materials.
It loosens old deposits
Ethanol acts like a solvent, dislodging years of gunk from old tanks and lines. That debris can clog fuel filters and injectors.
It has less energy
Ethanol has less energy per litre than petrol, so you use a bit more fuel for the same distance. That’s the mileage drop.
How much mileage are people actually losing?
| Vehicle (tested) | Mileage change on E20 |
|---|---|
| Maruti Suzuki Dzire (2024) | โ3.84% |
| Volkswagen Polo GT TSI (2017) | โ5.19% |
| Maruti Suzuki Dzire (2016) | โ12.42% |
| Hyundai Creta N Line (2024) | โ12.62% |
Results vary a lot by vehicle and driving style. Official ARAI estimates are 1โ6%, while some carmakers have cited 7โ8%.
๐ Is My Vehicle at Risk From E20?
Pick one option in each row.
๐ข Low risk
Your vehicle is likely built for E20 and used often enough that fuel doesn’t sit.
- Stick to your normal service schedule.
- Expect a small mileage dip, usually 1โ6%.
- Check the fuel-flap sticker or manual to confirm it’s E20-rated.
๐ก Moderate risk
Older materials or infrequent use make some wear more likely, but it’s manageable.
- At your next service, ask for fuel hoses, seals and the fuel filter to be inspected.
- Replace the fuel filter sooner than usual.
- Don’t let fuel sit for weeks. Use the vehicle regularly.
๐ด Higher risk
An older fuel system plus fuel sitting unused is the combination most likely to cause trouble.
- Ask your mechanic to replace old rubber fuel hoses and seals with ethanol-resistant ones.
- For storage longer than 3โ4 weeks, use a fuel stabiliser or drain the tank/carburettor.
- Watch for the warning signs below and act early.
9 Ways to Protect Your Vehicle From E20 Petrol
Check if your vehicle is E20-rated
Look for an “E20 Petrol” sticker near the fuel flap, check the owner’s manual, or ask your dealer. Vehicles made from April 2023 were required to be E20 Petrol-compatible.
ALL VEHICLESUpgrade old rubber fuel parts
For older vehicles, ask your mechanic to swap cracked or ageing fuel hoses, O-rings and seals for ethanol-resistant ones. The government itself says BS-III-era vehicles may need this, and it’s a routine service job.
PRE-2016 VEHICLESChange the fuel filter sooner
Because ethanol loosens old deposits, the filter can clog faster, especially in the first few months. Have it checked at every service in an older vehicle.
OLDER CARS & BIKESDon’t let fuel sit for weeks
Phase separation happens mostly in vehicles left standing. If a bike or second car sits idle, take it out at least once every week or two.
ALL VEHICLESKeep the tank reasonably full
Less air in the tank means less moist air for ethanol to absorb, particularly during the monsoon. Avoid running on a near-empty tank.
ALL VEHICLESUse a stabiliser for long storage
Parking for a month or more? Add a fuel stabiliser, or for carburettor bikes, drain the carburettor float bowl before storing.
STORED VEHICLESUse a fuel-system cleaner occasionally
A cleaner dose now and then helps keep injectors and carburettors free of deposits. For bikes, BikeWale suggests about 40โ50 ml in a full tank roughly every 1,000 km. Follow the product’s instructions and don’t overdo it.
OPTIONALFill up at busy, reliable pumps
High-turnover pumps have fresher fuel. Avoid filling while a tanker is unloading into the pump’s storage, which can stir up sediment and water.
ALL VEHICLESKeep your service records
Carmakers say warranties still apply with E20. If a fuel-system part fails, a clean service history makes any warranty or goodwill claim far easier.
VEHICLES UNDER WARRANTYWarning Signs Your Vehicle Isn’t Coping With E20 Petrol
If you notice any of these, get the fuel filter, hoses and injectors or carburettor checked before it becomes a costly pump or injector replacement.

Can You Still Buy Ethanol-Free Petrol?
Only in a limited way. Regular E10 and pure petrol are no longer sold alongside E20 Petrol at normal pumps. The main exception is 100-octane premium petrol, which is sold in limited volumes at select outlets and costs much more. For most everyday cars and bikes, paying the premium isn’t worth it. The steps above protect your vehicle for far less.
What’s Coming Next: E22 to E30
On May 15, 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards notified standards for E22, E25, E27 and E30 blends (IS 19850:2026). No rollout date has been announced, but the direction is clear: ethanol content in Indian petrol is going up, not down. If you’re buying a new vehicle, check what blends it’s certified for, and if you’re keeping an older one, the protective steps above matter more with every increase.
The Bottom Line
For vehicles made from April 2023, E20 Petrol is mostly a non-issue beyond a small mileage dip. For older cars and bikes, especially carburettor two-wheelers that sit for weeks, the risk is real but cheap to manage: newer fuel hoses and seals, a fresher fuel filter, and not letting fuel sit. A few hundred rupees of preventive maintenance now beats a fuel pump or injector bill later.
