What were you stopped for?
Fines can be lower in your state. The amounts here are the central fines under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. States can set lower “compounding” amounts for many offences, and several (including Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra) have done so for helmets, seat belts and similar offences. Your challan shows the exact amount for your state. (Traffic Challan Fine List)

New e-challan rules from 2026

The Central Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2026 (G.S.R. 48(E), notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on 21 January 2026) changed how challans work:

  • Delivery deadlines: an e-challan must reach you within 3 days of the offence being recorded, and a paper challan within 15 days.
  • 45 days to pay or contest: you can pay, or challenge it online with proof. If you do neither, the challan is treated as accepted.
  • Decision within 30 days: if you contest, the authority decides within 30 days. If it goes against you, you pay within 30 days, or deposit 50% to take it to court.
  • Unpaid challans block services: your vehicle can be marked “Not to be Transacted”, which stops sale, transfer and RC or licence applications. Persistent defaulters’ vehicles can be detained.
  • Five strikes: five or more offences in a year (counted from 1 January 2026) can lead to your driving licence being disqualified.

  1. Go to the official e-challan site, echallan.parivahan.gov.in, or open the mParivahan app.
  2. Choose “Check online services”, then “Check challan status”, and enter your challan number, vehicle number or driving licence number.
  3. Check the photo, place and time. If it’s wrong, use the grievance option and upload proof within 45 days.
  4. To pay, tap “Pay now” and pay by UPI, card or net banking. Save the receipt.
  5. Older or disputed challans can also be settled at a Lok Adalat, where fines are often reduced. Watch for your state’s Lok Adalat dates.
Beware of fake challan messages. Scammers send SMS and WhatsApp messages with links to “pay your challan” that install malware or steal card details. Only pay on echallan.parivahan.gov.in or the mParivahan app, and never install an APK file from a message. Read more about WhatsApp and UPI scams.
