What is CADR? Clean Air Delivery Rate is how many cubic metres of filtered air a purifier delivers per hour. It’s the single most important number on the box. For Delhi-NCR winters, aim to clean your room’s air about 5 times an hour, and buy one size up so the purifier can run quietly on medium instead of noisily on max.

8 best air purifiers in India for 2026

All eight use a HEPA H13-grade filter (which traps at least 99.95% of fine particles) plus activated carbon for smells and gases. Specs are from the brands; filter costs are typical replacement prices and can change.

How to choose an air purifier in India

  • CADR first, brand second. A ₹9,000 purifier with the right CADR beats a ₹25,000 one that’s too small for your room. Use the calculator above.
  • True HEPA H13 filter. Avoid ā€œHEPA-typeā€ or ā€œHEPA-likeā€ filters. H13 is the standard for PM2.5.
  • Count the filter cost. In Delhi winters filters can wear out up to twice as fast as the rated life. A cheap purifier with costly, short-lived filters can cost more over three years.
  • Noise on the setting you’ll use. Check the sleep-mode noise for bedrooms. Running one size up on medium is quieter than a small unit on max.
  • Skip ionisers and ozone generators. They can produce ozone, which irritates lungs. Plasma or ion features are fine if they can be switched off.
  • An AQI display helps. A PM2.5 sensor and auto mode let the purifier speed up when you cook or someone opens a door.
Close the windows. An air purifier can’t keep up with an open window. Keep doors and windows shut while it runs, clean the pre-filter every 2 weeks, and run it on high during Diwali and other peak-pollution nights.

Air purifier FAQs

Which is the best air purifier in India for Delhi pollution?

The best one is the one with enough CADR for your room. For a typical 150–200 sq ft bedroom, look for 250–300 m³/h, such as the Philips AC1715 or Coway Airmega 150. For a living room of 300–400 sq ft, look for 450 m³/h or more, such as the Philips AC3220 or Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6.

What size air purifier do I need for a 200 sq ft room?

For a 200 sq ft room with a 10 ft ceiling in Delhi winter, about 280 m³/h, aiming for 5 air changes an hour. Use the calculator above for your exact room.

How often should I change the air purifier filter?

Most HEPA filters are rated for 6–12 months, but in heavy Delhi pollution they can need changing sooner. Follow the purifier’s filter indicator, and clean the washable pre-filter every 2 weeks.

Is it safe to run an air purifier all night?

Yes. HEPA purifiers are designed to run continuously. Use sleep mode in the bedroom for low noise and a dim display.

Does an air purifier remove smoke and smell?

The HEPA filter removes smoke particles; the activated carbon layer reduces smells and some gases. Heavy smells (like cooking) need a purifier with a thicker carbon filter.
