Countdown to Lakshmi Puja—
Pradosh kaal
Mahanishita (Simha lagna)
Dhanteras puja (Fri 6 Nov)
Why this time? Lakshmi Puja is best done during Pradosh kaal, the roughly two and a half hours after sunset on Amavasya, while the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna is rising. Vrishabha is a “sthir” (fixed) lagna, and the belief is that Lakshmi stays in a home where she is worshipped in a fixed lagna. On 8 November both overlap almost fully, giving a clean window of just under two hours.

Simple Lakshmi Puja vidhi at home

  1. Clean and decorate. Clean the house, make a rangoli at the entrance and place diyas at the door.
  2. Set up the chowki. Spread a red cloth on a wooden stool, place idols or a picture of Lakshmi and Ganesha (Ganesha to Lakshmi’s left), and a kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut.
  3. Begin with Ganesha. Light a diya and incense, offer flowers and sweets, and say a short prayer to Ganesha first.
  4. Worship Lakshmi. Offer kumkum, haldi, rice, lotus or marigold flowers, coins, sweets and kheel-batashe. Chant “Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah” or read the Lakshmi Aarti.
  5. Worship your account books or cash box if you run a business, as part of Chopda or Bahi-khata puja.
  6. Aarti and diyas. Do the aarti with the family, then light diyas around the house, starting from the puja room.
